Morisawa Inc. (president and CEO: Akihiko Morisawa; headquarters: 2-6-25 Shikitsu Higashi, Naniwa-ku, Osaka; Main: 06-6649-2151; "Morisawa" hereafter) will provide the universal design font BIZ UD to Google Fonts, a font service library offered by Google.

As a universal design (UD) font, BIZ UD was developed to ensure legibility and readability. Its superior readability draws on extensive end-user evaluation. The font is a good choice where information must be conveyed accurately – in educational settings, corporate communication environments, and other places using ICT. Implementing BIZ UD in Google Fonts and making it available in Google Workspace has enabled documents with broad compatibility.

Providing BIZ UD via Google Fonts will make the font available in Chrome OS™ and Google Workspace. We encourage more people around the world to improve their communication by choosing effective fonts, and we hope that the power of typography will make information more accessible.

In this release, the font is provided through a SIL Open Font License, enabling use based on this license.

TrueType and OpenType

The TrueType version is fully compatible except for four characters (0x3099, 0x2dc, 0x9b1d, and 0x29fd7) added for backward compatibility that enable input of all characters of IPA Font Ver. 003 (latest version). This makes the font more convenient for educational use compared to the fonts previously introduced for Microsoft Windows 10 (October 2018 Update or later) and Windows 11.
Also for improved usability, BIZ UDMincho Bold and BIZ UDPMincho Bold have been newly developed with several characters conforming to IPA Font specifications, which distinguishes them from fonts provided elsewhere.
The OpenType version has a proprietary specification and is not compatible with Adobe Japan 1 fonts.
