Morisawa Releases 35 New Typeface Families for 2026, Including Sha-Ken Typefaces Such as Ishii Maru Gothic and Honran Mincho, and Keyaki Maru Gothic Oldstyle, a New Addition to the Keyaki Series

Morisawa Inc. (President and CEO: Akihiko Morisawa; Headquarters: 2-6-25 Shikitsuhigashi, Naniwa-ku, Osaka; Tel: 06-6649-2151 (main); hereinafter “Morisawa”) released a total of 35 typeface families as its new typefaces for 2026 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The lineup includes Sha-Ken typefaces such as Ishii Maru Gothic and Honran Mincho, as well as Japanese Gothic typefaces, display typefaces, multilingual typefaces, and Keyaki Maru Gothic Oldstyle, a new addition to the Keyaki series.

For this year’s new typefaces, 21 Sha-Ken typeface families have been added to the lineup through an OpenType font development project with Sha-Ken (President and CEO: Yoshitaka Kasahara; Headquarters: 2-35-2 Minami-Otsuka, Toshima-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter “Shaken”).

Two families have been added as typeface revivals, preserving the elegance of the original typefaces while redesigning them for contemporary environments and applications. Ishii Maru Gothic, based on a design by Mokichi Ishii, the founder of Shaken, is an old-style rounded Gothic typeface. Honran Mincho is a modern-style Mincho typeface whose clear design retains the nuances of traditional brushwork.

The Shaken Classics collection, for which specifications were refined based on outline data provided by Shaken, including the addition of missing characters, has been expanded with 17 typeface families.

These include Tankoin, which combines traditional character structures with the textures of ink bleeding and fading, and Solare, a paper-cut-style display typeface that had never previously been released and is being unveiled for the first time with this release.

New weights have also been added to the Gona and Nar families, supporting a broader range of uses.

In addition, 12 new Morisawa typeface families have been added, including Japanese Gothic and rounded Gothic typefaces, display typefaces, and multilingual typefaces, further expanding the font library.

The Keyaki series welcomes Keyaki Maru Gothic Oldstyle, a rounded Gothic typeface with an old-fashioned character. Using it together with other typefaces in the Keyaki series that share the same concept enables a consistent design expression.

Other additions include Yurara Maru Go, a rounded Gothic typeface characterized by a handwritten quality and clean, slightly condensed proportions; Kuramochi Meiseki and Kurofune Meiseki, old-style Gothic typefaces combining kanji designs revived from inscriptions dating from China’s Jin dynasty with kana designs revived from modern Japanese metal type; TakaPeak, featuring playful character structures and strokes with dramatic flares; and the powerful and energetic brush-style display typefaces Susuguro and Hisen.

The lineup also includes four multilingual typeface families, including Othoro Pro, a Latin typeface characterized by geometric strokes and uniform proportions, as well as typefaces for Hangul, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

In addition, two TypeBank typeface families have been added: UD DigiKyo Latin Condensed and UD DigiKyo Italic Condensed, the Latin typefaces of UD Digital Kyokasho. They are recommended for English-language educational materials for intermediate learners, including junior high and high school students.
